Introduction
Munich is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany and it’s also home to some of its most famous attractions, including Marienplatz. The square has been a meeting place for locals and visitors alike for over 800 years, so you can imagine just how many people have passed through it over that time—and all found something to love about this historical landmark.
As one of the largest squares within Munich city limits, Marienplatz was first laid out in 1257 at the center of Munich by Ludwig der Bayer who wanted a central square where he could hold court with his subjects nearby. This medieval market was originally named after St Mary’s Church (Marienkirche) which stood on this site until 1817 when it was destroyed by fire. Today, this historic part of town offers plenty more things to do than just stand around and take photos!
Marienplatz & Rathausplatz
Located in the heart of Munich, Marienplatz is the city’s main square. It’s a popular spot for people watching and enjoying a coffee or snack at one of its many cafes, restaurants, and shops. The Rathaus (town hall) is located on this square which gives it even more character and adds to its charm as an attraction worth visiting while you’re in town.
The area around Marienplatz is filled with history that dates back hundreds of years; there are plenty of museums nearby if you want to learn more about Munich’s past. Many locals come here during their lunch break so if you’re looking for somewhere quiet then this might not be your best bet–but if you love crowds then this could be just what you need! If we had just arrived at our hotel then I would definitely recommend starting here because it offers so much within walking distance: shops & restaurants; transportation options such as buses & trains; city tours from companies like Viator (which we used); etc…
Hofbrdukerei
The Hofbrdukerei is one of Munich’s most popular attractions. Located in the heart of the city, it’s a short walk from Marienplatz and other top sites like Frauenkirche and Odeonsplatz. The brewery was founded in 1826 by Franz Josef I as a tribute to his wife Maria Louisa; today, it produces some of Germany’s finest beers–including their signature Hofbrau beer.
The brewery offers tours every day except Mondays (closed). Tours last about 45 minutes but you can also stop by anytime during opening hours to sample their selection or enjoy some food from their restaurant menu with friends!
Viktualienmarkt
The Viktualienmarkt is one of the best places to go in Munich. The market is located near Marienplatz and offers a wide array of food and drink options, as well as plenty of activities. You’ll find everything from fresh produce to artisanal crafts and souvenirs, along with plenty of places where you can sit down and enjoy your meal or snack while people watching.
Odeonsplatz/Englischer Garten
The Odeonsplatz is located in the center of Munich, just south of Marienplatz. It’s home to one of the city’s most famous landmarks: the Feldherrnhalle.
The Feldherrnhalle was built in 1841 as part of a monument commemorating Bavaria’s victory over Napoleon at Leipzig in 1813. The building has become a symbol for German patriotism ever since–it’s where Hitler gave speeches during World War II and where he committed suicide after his defeat by Allied forces in 1945. Today, visitors can explore its interior and learn more about its history at an exhibition inside (admission fee).
The area surrounding Odeonsplatz is also worth exploring on foot or bike; it features lots of restaurants, cafes, bars and shops along with plenty of green spaces like Englischer Garten (the English Garden), which was once part of an aristocrat’s garden but now serves as one big park area where locals come to relax on sunny days!
Theatinerkirche
Theatinerkirche is a church in Munich, located on the west side of the Odeonsplatz. It was built in 1663-1719 and designed by Johann Baptist Gunetzrhainer. The church has been converted into a museum since 1973 and it’s open every day from 09:00 to 18:00 except Monday when it closes at 17:00.
Theatinerkirche is one of the most famous churches in Munich due to its location on Odeonsplatz which has several notable museums such as Deutsches Museum or Pinakothek der Moderne nearby it.
Neue Pinakothek
The Neue Pinakothek is a museum of modern art, located in the former palace of the Bavarian kings. It has a large collection of works by Picasso, Matisse and Modigliani as well as German Expressionist paintings. The museum also houses several sculptures by Rodin and Moore as well as paintings by Monet and Van Gogh.
