Introduction
Asia is the world’s largest and most populous continent. It’s home to some of the most populated cities in the world and has a rich history that dates back thousands of years. But it’s also home to some incredibly unique destinations that are off the beaten path. These locales provide an authentic cultural experience while also providing an escape from hectic city life. Here are seven Asian locales not often visited by tourists but well worth exploring:
Hoi An, Vietnam
Hoi An is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Vietnam’s most charming towns. The city has a long history, dating back to its founding in the 15th century. It’s famous for its collection of well-preserved ancient buildings, including temples, pagodas and houses made from wood or brick. Hoi An also boasts an impressive number of tailors who work in their shops along the main streets of town–you can get your clothes customized here at reasonable prices!
For foodies: Try some delicious pho soup at one of many local eateries; it’s said to be one of the best places in Asia for this dish (and we agree).
Hanoi, Vietnam
Hanoi is a city of great historical significance and cultural importance. It was the capital of North Vietnam during French colonization, but fell into disrepair after World War II. Since then, Hanoi has undergone extensive renovations and has become one of Asia’s most vibrant cities. The Old Quarter district remains one of its greatest treasures: narrow streets are lined with shops selling traditional goods such as silk scarves and ceramics; young workers sit on stoops chatting with friends over tea; vendors sell freshly prepared food from carts pushed by bicycles or motorbikes (known locally as xe om). For those looking for something more than just sightseeing tours or eating at local restaurants, consider spending some time exploring by foot through this vibrant neighborhood–you’ll be rewarded with an authentic experience unlike any other!
Kathmandu, Nepal
Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal and one of the most culturally diverse cities in Asia. It’s also a great place to visit if you want to experience both Indian culture and Nepalese culture, as many locals speak both languages.
Kathmandu has been home to many important historical figures throughout time including Buddha himself!
Luang Prabang, Laos
Located in the northern region of Laos, Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is known for its Buddhist temples and monasteries, which date back to the 16th century when Laos was ruled by the King of Lan Xang (or “Land of a Million Elephants”). Many travelers visit Luang Prabang to explore its rich cultural history, hike through nearby mountains and rice paddies, or simply enjoy some downtime at one of its many hotels or restaurants.
While there are plenty of places to see within Luang Prabang itself–including Wat Xieng Thong Temple (a must-see!)–it’s also worth exploring nearby attractions such as Kuang Si waterfall park or Vat Phou temple complex. If you’re looking for something off-the-beaten path but still close enough for easy access from your hotel room at night? We recommend going on an overnight boat trip down Mekong River!
Ubud, Bali, Indonesia
Ubud is a great place to visit, with its many attractions and activities. It’s also one of the most popular tourist destinations in Indonesia, so it’s easy to find good accommodations and restaurants there.
If you’re looking for something different from your typical beach vacation, Ubud should be at the top of your list!
Cebu City, Philippines
Cebu City is the second largest city in the Philippines, and it’s known for its cuisine and nightlife. The city is also home to a large number of churches and cathedrals, so if you’re into religious history this could be an interesting place to visit.
Cebu City has some excellent scuba diving sites nearby, including Apo Reef which contains over 30 varieties of corals with more than 400 species of fish! There are also many opportunities for snorkeling here as well–you can even rent equipment at some dive shops if you don’t have your own gear!
Manila and Vigan, Philippines
If you’re looking for an exotic destination that offers a taste of the Philippines without all the crowds, look no further than Vigan. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is located in Ilocos Sur province, about an hour’s drive from Manila. The town is known for its Spanish Colonial architecture and has been called the “Pueblo Mágico” (Magic Town) due to its preserved colonial buildings. You can explore these historic structures while taking in views of nearby mountains or strolling along cobblestone streets lined with shops selling traditional crafts.
Vigan is also home to some excellent restaurants serving up authentic Filipino cuisine like adobo chicken or pork belly adobo; try them out on your next visit!
Yangon and Mandalay, Myanmar (Burma)
In Myanmar (Burma), the cities of Yangon and Mandalay offer a slice of life that’s both modern and traditional. Golden Rock is one of the country’s most sacred sites, while Bagan offers stunning temples dating back thousands of years. Inle Lake is a peaceful oasis within easy reach by boat or plane from these two dynamic cities.
Kolkata (Calcutta), India
Kolkata (Calcutta) is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. It is also known as “the city of joy” and has been called “the cultural capital of India.” The city was established in 1690 by Job Charnock, an English trader who set up a trading post there; it soon became an important center for trade between Europe and Asia.
Kolkata’s population grew dramatically during its first two centuries, reaching 500,000 by 1750; it passed 1 million around 1830 and 2 million by 1850 before becoming part of British India in 1856. At that point it was already one of the largest cities in Asia; today its population exceeds 14 million people within its metropolitan area alone!
